Question about Murray Hill area-Midtown East @ 39th

We are spending a few nights at Midtown East at 39th (Murray Hill East apartments) after reading decent reviews here and getting a great rate. The info I received states it%26#39;s in walking distance to the theater district. We will be seeing both Phantom of the Opera %26amp; Lion King on two consecutive nights. My question is: how much time should we allow to walk to both of these theaters(New Amsterdam %26amp; Majestic) or should we take a cab? Also, any restaurant suggestions are greatly appreciated for a couple %26amp; 2 daughters, youngest is 16. Any type of food. Thank you.

Question about Murray Hill area-Midtown East @ 39th

Two of my four children and I stayed at Shelburne Murray Hill last fall ....very close to where you will be....I felt it was comfortable walking distance (we walked home from seeing Phantom) and there were no complaints from my then 6 and 12 yr. old (although it was a bit chilly that night) ....It is also really easy to grab the subway directly to times square (from Grand Central which is like 2 blocks or so from your hotel) and get to the majestic qucikly.......wow, there are so many great places to eat...it is truly hard for this Tulsa girl to suggest...so I will leave that to someone else.....but , if you are in a bind for time and do take the subway from Grand Central rather than walking you can really find something for everyone at the food court in Grand Central (an easy choice for families)....I prefer to dine somewhere nice when I am not doing the theater....more time to really enjoy and not feel so rushed with time.... hope you have a great time....we are returning to NYC next week for yet another visit...

Question about Murray Hill area-Midtown East @ 39th

You will be at East 39th and Lexington. The Majestic is on 44th Street west of Seventh, and the New Amsterdam is on 42nd west of Seventh. From where you are staying to the theaters will be a walk of a half mile or so. How long does it take you to walk a half mile in the city? If you do not want to walk all the way, go up to Grand Central and take either the #7 or the S shuttle to Times Square -- but only if you have unlimited Metro Cards; if you do not, a cab will be cheaper for a group.

Kim, depending on your interests, you might be interested in visiting the Morgan Library, located right near you at 36th and Madison Ave. A new addition makes this an even more spectacular spot. If it%26#39;s not right for a visit this time, then at least walk around it from 36th St along Madison and then along 35th Street. Aside from the obvious architectural interest, you can tell your kids that this was the first private home in the world to use electricity. Thomas Edison desgned the home-electricity scheme himself and along with some workers, installed it in this, the home of his primary investor, J.P. Morgan. There is no sign to tell you this (unless they put one up since I last walked by).

Depending on the weather when you come out of the theater, you might not want to walk crosstown, and it%26#39;s nearly impossible to get a taxi home. All the shows let out about the same time, and competition for the few taxis is fierce. You can also take a bus home. They run crosstown along 42nd Street. You can take either the M104 or the M42. You can use your metrocard in subways or buses.

I think you%26#39;ll find the wak absolutely fascinating as it includes what%26#39;s left of the garment district. I walk through that part of town all the time. You should also walk down to around 34th and walk East from Broadway. Esp on a Friday or Saturday night. The area is heavily Korean and the street is brightly list -- very exotic if you arent%26#39; used to that type of thing.

Thank you all for the very helpful info in each of your answers to me. Especially interesting to my daughter will be the Morgan Library...thanks for the heads up on that as well.
