Jazz clubs in New York

Still planning a surprise birthday trip for my partner next May 07.

He%26#39;s a big experimental jazz fan - nothing trad and I am wondering which club to take him to......

Village Vanguard looks like the best bet but not sure how close to the city it is.... staying at the Blakely Hotel... advice on how to get there would be much appreciated.

What do you think?

The Village Vanguard is in Greenwich Village-it%26#39;s in the city, about a 15 minute subway ride form your hotel. the Blue Note is also nice, though pricy and you might want to also look at Iridium.

I think it depends on who%26#39;s playing where when you%26#39;re here. This website lists most of the clubs

';The city'; is what most locals call the island of Manhattan (although the outer buroughs are also actually part of the city). Anyway, it%26#39;s not like London where ';the city'; is the financial area.

Another possible option is Dizzy%26#39;s which is a Jazz at Loncoln Center property. Awesome place and it is my favorite jazz club of all time. But of course, it%26#39;s usually more important who is playing rather than the venue perhaps.

If you want to have dinner at the same time, there are two places you can listen to jazz music and have a nice dinner at the same time. There%26#39;s the Blue water grill in Union square in the downstairs room. The food is really good. There%26#39;s also Jules on St-Mark%26#39;s place in the East village. It is a nice little french bistro with good food and not too expensive.
