baggage storage

Hi.

We are off to NYC for the first time for 5 nights in early December and we are so excited. I have lots of questions so please be patient with me, I%26#39;m a novice!!

As we are stopping in New York en route to New Zealand where we are emmigrating to, we will have lots and lots of luggage and naturally don%26#39;t want to be getting on and off the subway with 46 kilos of baggage each! Are there facilities to store your luggage while you are in the city at JFK or anywhere else that anyone knows off?

We need a really really cheap hotel, any ideas?

Thanks for your help

Dido

NO luggage storage since 9/11. What sort of budget do you have for hotel and what do you need (ie how many of you and do your require private bathroom)?

baggage storage

There are baggage storage facilities at JFK (in terminals 1 %26amp; 4). On the airport website (http://www.panynj.gov/aviation/jsbsfram.htm), they say that rates range from $4 to $16 per day depending on size.

You%26#39;ll get better hotel advice if you can provide some more specific information, such as exact dates, your budget (everyone has their own definition of ';cheap';), number of adults/children, etc. Also, would you be willing to share a bathroom?

thanks for the answers so far. our definition of cheap is $100 or less and we are quite happy to share a bathroom. We are a married couple arriving at 5.45 am Yuk! on the 5th of Dec and leaving at 14.20 on the 11th. All we require is a safe and clean place to lay our heads. It would be fantastic to stay somewhere divine but as we are emmigrating, we need to watch all our pennies to use in our new life in New Zealand.

Thanks again for your help

Dido

Dear Dido123,

Well, Early December is quite busy here.

I checked Hotels.com and sort by price. There is only one hotel in manhattan that comes up at $100, which comes to about $117 with tax. Since I work at a hotel really don%26#39;t like commenting on other hotels, but check them out on this site. Buyt don%26#39;t expect much for that amount, it is real low for Manhattan.

Hi Dido,

I just spent 2 nights in NY City with a friend and our budget was about $100 per night. I tried to book a room in The Larchmont in the Village and if you try now you might be able to get a room for the time you are planning on visiting. The cost is more than $120 a night+tax. The hotel was booked for the 2 nights I needed a room, so I kept looking and found the Riverside Tower hotel in the Upper West Side. We paid $230 for 2 nights for a double. Now in our case the double ended up being a VERY small room with a single bed and a trundle, and a closet size bathroom, BUT for what we needed it was fine.

The carpet and furnishings were worn, but clean. The sheets were clean and towels were clean and got changed daily(I鈥檝e seen some bad stuff in places that were all kinds of fancy) and the room had a TV, fridge and microwave.

The selling point for this hotel is location. It is in a very safe, quiet area of the city. It is 2 blocks off of Broadway with restaurants and shopping, 3 blocks from the 79th St subway station that will get you down town and 5 blocks from Central Park and the American Museum of Natural history.

It does have a web site and I recommend you visit it. Because the rooms are small you won%26#39;t be able to keep your luggage with you, BUT the Riverside offers storage of some luggage and might let you keep some in their storage room. If you can, though, leave it at the air port.

And No, I do not work for riverside...........

You might consider staying at the Pan American hotel in Queens. They have a free shuttle to/from both JFK and La Guardia airport. (From which airport do you depart?) It%26#39;s not in Manhattan, but you can get a bus or subway from there to Manhattan.

If you want to stay in Manhattan, your options will be pretty limited I think since early Dec. is such a popular time for tourists.
