2 Scots travelling to NYC ... now for reservations!!!

Dear all

Thanks to everyone who posted replies to my rather daft question of %26#39;what to do in NYC%26#39;! I booked a surprise trip to NY for my husband%26#39;s 40th and as you%26#39;d expect he was rather suprised but delighed. So here we go,

We fly into JFK on Thurs 30th Nov, at about 6%26#39;ish (evening). I have reserved a car from Carmel to pick us up and take us to our apartment in Horatio St, Greenwich Village. I thought about heading uptown to Times Square (try to be there at about 8.30%26#39;ish so that the shows are in progress). I was wondering if there was some place nice to eat.

Friday, I have reserved tickets for TOTR at 10am and we plan on walking down 5th Ave to see some of the window displays to 42nd Street where we meet a group for a free tour of Grand Central Station at 12.30pm (planned on getting to Juniors for the cheesecake just before 12???). We would head west to the Public library - just to see it from the outside I think and then down to Empire State building (again, just to see it from below). After that, ??? Would it be best to stay in this neck of the woods or head back to GV?

Saturday, we%26#39;ll start at the WTC and pay our respects and then take a Metro across to Brooklyn as we have reservations at the River Cafe at 12.30pm; then we%26#39;ll walk back across the Brooklyn Bridge to Canal Street and attempt to pick up a metro to take us to Union Square, then ...??? Again, is it best to stay there or Chinatown, or head to GV??? Is it best to fit in a trip to the Statue of Liberty at this point? Hadn%26#39;t planned to travel to the actual island this trip but wondered if there was a way to see it close up from a boat but not have to spend three hours stuck on a cold boat???

Sunday, thought about heading back uptown to Central Park and had no further idea on that apart from taking afternoon tea at the St Regis ... any other thoughts???

Monday (we fly home at 8%26#39;ish (evening) and so shopping maybe???

Does this sound unrealistic? Oh, also thought about trying to get tickets for David Letterman?

Oh, and before I forget - thanks once again to everyone for their fantastic help, without which we tourists would be lost and aimless! Thanks from a really grateful Scot, and if you%26#39;re ever in my neck of the woods ... drop me an email and I%26#39;ll get you to all sorts of weird and wonderful parts of Scotland (of which, there are many!).

Kindest Regards

Lynne

Sounds like a good trip you have planned there! (from a fellow Scot!)

Who are you flying with?

I was going to suggest, if you dont want to get the boat over to the Statue of Liberty you could try a helicopter tour? I did that when I went to New York Dec 04. Its about $60 each, and the helicopter goes down by the Statue of Liberty then back up the river then back down the the heliport. You can see all the sights from it. Its just an idea, I went with Liberty Helicopters: http://www.libertyhelicopters.com/tours/.

Have a great trip!

I would personally head back to GV for the evenings. You%26#39;ll have a much better selection of restaurants in the village and will enjoy the evening walks along the quaint streets.

As for David Letterman, you may get lucky and get tickets if you call ahead, but you%26#39;ll have to answer a trivia question about the show, just FYI.

Lynne, Horatio St. and the village is charming. Rather than heading to Times Square when you first arrive, why not stay in the village and explore your new neighborhood? Also, it will be late for you. The Art Bar on 8th ave. b/w Horatio %26amp; Jane st. might be a good stop for a drink and some light food.

There%26#39;s also the Chocolat Bar

On Friday, your directions are slightly off and if you don%26#39;t plan carefully, you%26#39;re liable to miss the Grand Central tour. Fifth ave. is the ';line of demarcation'; b/w east and west. TOTR is on Fifth %26amp; 49 st. You might stop at Lord %26amp; Taylor first (Fifth %26amp; 38 st) and then head north to Rockefeller Center. You will PASS the Library at Fifth %26amp; 42 st on your way. At Rock Ctr., you%26#39;ll be across from Saks Fifth Ave. Then head to Grand Central. I don%26#39;t think you%26#39;ll have time for cheesecake before the tour if you make stops on the way. ;) At that time of year, there%26#39;s a Xmas market in Grand Central. (There%26#39;s also one in Bryant Park which is behind the library).

On Sat. maybe after walking the bridge, you should head to the FREE STaten Island ferry and have a roundtrip ride to see the Statue of Liberty? After the ferry, you can get a subway to Union Square if that%26#39;s where you%26#39;d like to go or head to Soho or Greenwich Village.

Do you know about the website hopstop.com? It helps you plot a transit route (and even gives approx. prices of taxis from point A to B IN Manhattan). ;)

Dear odile_odette

Glad to hear that the Scots are still a well-travelled bunch. I take it you enjoyed your trip and I will certainly look into the helicopter ride (we took a heli-trip through the Grand Canyon and it was fabulous).

Dagny_freckles, thanks for your help. I did know about the trivia question, but I%26#39;m not the fan, it%26#39;s my husband.

nywhiz - who are you???!!! I%26#39;m amazed at your postings and your generosity with your time - thank goodness for folks like you, you%26#39;ve certainly helped to make our trip that bit more special - thanks a million.

Regards

Lynne

I don%26#39;t think you%26#39;ll have a shot at Letterman. You%26#39;ll be arriving too late for a Thursday show, and he usually tapes his Friday shows ahead of time (I believe they typically do 2 shows on Thursday). I can%26#39;t find any schedule information on the website (www.cbs.com/latenight/lateshow), so you could inquire about the availability of tickets for Friday 12/1 -- who knows, maybe they%26#39;ll be on a different schedule that week.

OK - I just found the ticket request form for Letterman and tried to request December 1st, but the first date that comes up in December is the 4th, so it appears the ';no taping on Friday'; rule still prevails.

I want to make a plug for stopping in at the Main Library. If you pop in and just look at the main reading room, you won%26#39;t regret it.

This photo is just one corner of the room

There is no taping of the Letterman show on Fridays. Also there is no taping from Nov 29th on till Dec. 11th when they come back from vacation.
