When is the least busy time of the day to ride the ferry, last time we went on it was really busy so we had to queue for ages to get there and also to get back across. We are in NYC from Saturday 11/25 till Thursday 11/30 so we could go any day at any time.

The busiest times are during rush hour since many people use the ferry as their regular transportation to/from work. Rush hours are broadly M-F 7-9 am and 4-7 pm.

weekends are busy too because of the tourists. Since you are here during thanksgiving - i would recommend any day monday - thursday anytime between 10 and 3.
One reason it may have seemed busy is that on weekends the boats run less frequently than they do on weekdays.

Thanks to everyone for your help, I think we might try Monday or Tuesday midday - if we can tear ourselves away from the shopping!!!
A friend and I went yesterday on the 12:30 pm run and I have to say, the crowds are a little deceiving. Yes, there may be a thousand or so people waiting for them, but the ferries themselves are so big that they still look fairly empty after everybody%26#39;s on--at least ours did. We had no wait. no problems and an incredible view of Lower Manhattan on the way back.
