Central Park at night???

Does anybody know is central park safe at night time? I plan to propose to my girlfriend after the NYC ballet in Central park somewhere but I was just wondering if it is safe to walk around there at night time (during the Christmas period!)? Also is there anywhere particularly romantic there you could suggest...? Thanks a mill...

Central Park at night???

On both my trips to NYC we were told not to go to Central Park at night by our hotels. I am sure it depends which areas of the park you go to though. We loved the park best as it was starting to get dark with a twilight sky.

Have fun!

Central Park at night???

If you are going to be in NY on Dec. 31 there is a fire works dsiplay at 12 AM. It will be safe in the area of the fireworks display since there will be lots of people in the park.

What time does the ballet end? I%26#39;m presuming the performance is at Lincoln Center, in which case you%26#39;ll be near the Southwest corner of Central Park, which is reasonably safe in the evening.

In that area, a few suggestions would be:

- The pond (Southeast Corner of the Park, but an easy walk) there%26#39;s a lovely stone bridge called The Gapstow Bridge, which would be an ideal spot.

- Overlooking Wollman Rink (not sure how late they%26#39;ll be open, but it%26#39;s a great skyline view) I%26#39;d probably pick the Bridge though

- Sheep Meadow, which is a beatiful expanse of lawn with great sklyline views. Maybe crowded as per the above note on the fireworks.

Congrats in advance!

Just to be honest, my biggest problem with Central Park at night is the rats. Let%26#39;s face it, everyone knows we have rats in NYC, and they are evening creatures.

The following was told to me by a NYC Dept. of Health Exterminator:

Because Central Park is surrounded on all sides by residential buildings, there is a lot of food garbage for rats to eat at all times. Also, becasue the park is narrow, no other animals can claim turf in the park%26#39;s interior.

Other parks, like Prospect Park or Van Cortlandt Park, are wider in the middle, so raccoons, oppossum, cats and other night-time animals control the interiors, while rats hang out only around the perimeters.

Even though Central Park is cleaner and safer today than ever before, I%26#39;d still be concerned about the long-tailed park patrol at night!

Thanks for all the great advice guys...The ides of rats are putting me off alright a bit I must say!

The ballet is on in the Lincoln center and its over at 10 i think.

I was also thinking maybe the rainbow room for dinner and dancing afterwards (very expensive though!) of else The river Cafe for a late dinner (last searving is at 11 though so dont know if I%26#39;d make it over there by then?) Of else at the Rokafeller Christmas tree??? Don%26#39;t want it to be too bust though!!! But after the Ballet it might be quieter...maybe!
