Thanks so much guys, I%26#39;m about to start a photography course as its something I%26#39;m really interested in but am a complete novice so I%26#39;m really grateful for your positive feedback at my 1st attempt! I was contemplating postponing my trip until I%26#39;d learnt a thing or 2 so I could get some good shots of NYC but hey, I%26#39;ll just have to book another one ;)

Sasharoon - those were 2 of the highlights of my trip, I think I may have picked up the suggestions from advice you gave others in the past so thanks a lot! The sphere does make you take stock and realise what went on that day. The Winter Garden was very serene, we kind of felt like we shouldnt have been there with all the workers flying around but they didnt bat an eyelid (the motto of NYC!!), and a good place to take a moment and take in Ground Zero. I%26#39;d totally recommend anyone spend some time there, then head outside (if its a nice day) and sit with the workers over lunch, great memories and fantastic view.

Your pictures are great, now are you the boy or the girl, whatever you did a great job. I was there in August and am also into photography and found NYC just so easy to photograph. You really don%26#39;t have to look for a shot. Your pictures of the Brooklyn bridge were especially nice. You got a great perspective. Loved the black and whites. What kind of camera did you use........You should definitly frame some....

Jillian I%26#39;m the female. I have just bought an Olympus E500 digital SLR which I was trying out. The manual came in German so it was pure guess-work! You are right though, on every corner there%26#39;s a photo-op!

I was wondering the same thing. I%26#39;d want to pay NO MORE than $40 per person, I have 1 child so a little less for her.

Yes I do mean 2006. As its x-mas day we would be willing to pay up $150.00 for the two of us.

We have been to NY before but stayed with my sister in-law in New Jersey and only spent a dozen hours over a few days in NY city , we ate where they took us, which were mostly dissapointing over priced places. the best meal we had was in a small cafe in Grenwich wich was very good food and inexpensive will try to find it again.

Jogging on the East Side

If you don%26#39;t want to do all that research just for a jog, you can also just jog north up Park Ave, hang a left at about 59th st. and go to Fifth Ave and enter the park at Grand Army Plaza.

You can save your jogging for Central Park by taking the N train at Union Square up to the 5th Avenue/59th Street stop (about 15 minutes). The subway stop is right under the southeast corner of the Park. It is a jogger%26#39;s paradise.

Joggers on the sidewalk in Manhattan are an annoyance to other pedestrians, and joggers in the street are a hazard to motorists and a risk to themselves. To put it simply and plainly -- DON%26#39;T jog on the street. Instead, take a bus or subway to a prk (either Central Park, or one of the nice jogging paths along the river) and jug where you are not simultaneously breathing bus fumes while causing inconvenience to other people and a threat to yourself.

Thanks everyone. I should have said that the subway is not an option. The goal is not so much getting to the park as finding one of these ';nice jogging paths along the river'; that Greenwhiteblue mentioned. So, how do I do that?

Take 14th Street as west as possible. You%26#39;ll hit the Hudson river Greenway, a lovely path that goes the length of Manhattan island!

I am a little puzzled, though -- why is the subway not an option?

Because I麓d like a new NYC experience. Like going for a run along the river. I figure I麓ll be seeing a fair amount of the subway system.

I enjoyed tremendously the resevoir track in central park. Central park boulevard and 91st streets (or was it 92-3) .

why? A nice bunch of runners at 7am already were hundreds of runners, although it looks easy the course is tough due to the winds etc.. the track is long enough was it 3 km. that plenty of space for everyone and at all skill levels. water fountain right there too. Not to mention the views ..... excellent.

ps I saw runners within the park(asphalt roads) in the same area but I am unsure of the course.

Let me set the scene.... 4 21year old boys from Glasgow, Scotland who would love to have more than a drink to many on new years eve, sing a few songs, get very drunk, have a great laugh and a joke in possibly an irish or scottish bar with other like minded folke!

Fly into new york on the 29th december, staying in a hostel on West 95th street . Any suggestions of a bar where you could possibly get very drunk and have a light snack without taking out a mortgage to do this!

Are you primarily interested in a bar (or bars) within walking (or the nearest approximation you will be able to make...) distance of the hostel? The upper west side is not the prime area for the activity you have in mind -- but I am sure that you will be able to get suggestions no matter whether you want to walk, or cab, the distance.

While it is fine and very safe when you are sober, I seriously do NOT recommend riding the subway when very drunk. In addition to the problem of negotiating a system you do not know when you don%26#39;t have your wits about you, there are lots of stairs to fall down, a platform to fall of of, and a specail kind of theif we call a ';lush-worker'; whose specialty is slitting the pockets of the very drunk to lift their wallets. If you do decide to head somewhere outside your neighborhood, plan on travelling by cab -- but keep in mind that on that night they weill be VERY hard to find.

Get ye to murphguide.com. They will list all the bars in NYC by type. There are lots of great Irish and Scottish bars, particularly on the east side in the 50s-70s. Like Eamon Doran. Cabs will be hard to find, but not impossible. Certainly if you stay up all night, there will be a cab at dawn! Have fun.

thanks mate there are a few more pubs which suggest irish bars and stuff so iam going to take a note of them.

Check out the bars on the Upper West Side, on Amsterdam Avenue and Columbus Avenue in the 80s and 90s. That way, you can simply stagger home back to the hostel!

Forgot to warn you: even the diviest of bars might charge some sort of cover for New Year%26#39;s Eve. This is one of the most expensive nights in NYC. Hopefully you at least get a champagne toast for free! Keep your eyes open for places that give you breakfast with the admission charge.

Bars in NYC stay open until 4 AM. Hotel bars might close earlier.

NYC also has ';after hours'; places. Buy a copy of Time Out New York magazine when you%26#39;re here, and look at the Clubs section. A ';moon'; symbol = late night.

On New Year%26#39;s Eve, many places stay open until 6 AM. You can pay anywhere from $25 to $225 per person and get maybe a glass of champagne, party hats and favors, a show, some snacks and a little breakfast and coffee when the party%26#39;s over. Quality and quantity vary widely!!! You get what you pay for. ;o)

Jazz clubs in New York

Still planning a surprise birthday trip for my partner next May 07.

He%26#39;s a big experimental jazz fan - nothing trad and I am wondering which club to take him to......

Village Vanguard looks like the best bet but not sure how close to the city it is.... staying at the Blakely Hotel... advice on how to get there would be much appreciated.

What do you think?

The Village Vanguard is in Greenwich Village-it%26#39;s in the city,about a 15 minute subway ride form your hotel. the Blue Note is also nice,though pricy and you might want to also look at Iridium.

';The city'; is what most locals call the island of Manhattan (although the outer buroughs are also actually part of the city). Anyway, it%26#39;s not like London where ';the city'; is the financial area.

Another possible option is Dizzy%26#39;s which is a Jazz at Loncoln Center property. Awesome place and it is my favorite jazz club of all time. But of course, it%26#39;s usually more important who is playing rather than the venue perhaps.

If you want to have dinner at the same time, there are two places you can listen to jazz music and have a nice dinner at the same time. There%26#39;s the Blue water grill in Union square in the downstairs room. The food is really good. There%26#39;s also Jules on St-Mark%26#39;s place in the East village. It is a nice little french bistro with good food and not too expensive.

hi.. so i live in queens and im turning 22 and have no idea where to go, so i figured someone on here could probably help me.

im looking for a bar where there is dancing, but you don%26#39;t have to get dressed up. it doesn%26#39;t have to be high class, just a fun place to dance and drink.

Hey, happy birthday!! Remember to be smart and be safe!

I%26#39;d start out on Bleecker Street (that%26#39;s always been the NYC version of ';training wheels'; for going out, back in the day.) Go to West 4th Street and exit at W.3rd Street. If you%26#39;re coming from Queens, stay in the front of the train.

Walk east on Bleecker and there%26#39;s lot of bars all in a row. It%26#39;s a mix of NYU, tourists and ';bridge and tunnel'; kids like you and me. Just go from 6th Ave to Lafayette, and you%26#39;ll see lots of option. Red Lion, Peculier Pub, Kenny%26#39;s Castaways, etc.

You could also try the East Village, maybe 1st Ave or Ave A. Lots of bars below 14th Street. ';Ace Bar'; springs to mind. Always fun. (old hangout of Jeanine Gorafolo and Ben Stiller before they were famous.)

The Lower East Side also has a lot of bars on Ludlow Street, but not real dancing places.

As a complete digression....

Keep in mind that NYC still has goofy ';cabaret laws';, that officially and legally PROHIBIT DANCING in bars without a real, official, expensive, bona fide cabaret license. This was no joke in the Giulinai years. I was in quite a few bars (that I suppose were ';undesirable'; at the time) where cops would pop in to check, or bouncers would get the word that the ';dance police'; were coming around, and bouncers and waitresses would ask folks to stop dancing. I kid you not. (Lots of ';fire hazard'; closings during that time as well, I recall. Good way to close down a place when the neighbors complain a lot.)

Not sure how it is now, but I think this is unlikely these days. I thnk people jsut get up and dance if a good song comes one. I%26#39;m out of the loop because, nowadays, I usually go to depressing places (if at all!) where no one has the energy, good health or sunny disposition to dance.

It%26#39;s a comfy spot, very convenient. I%26#39;m not crazy about the food though. Honestly, I%26#39;d rather have a pizza at John%26#39;s, which is next door. You might try Bond 45, just a block and a half away. Pretty good Italian. Or any of the usual spots on Restaurant Row -- Joe Allen (where Angus was formerly the captain), Orso, Lattanzi.

I%26#39;m with Bettina. Not crazy about the food but it%26#39;s not terrible. The folks there are very nice though. They have a raw bar if you%26#39;re looking for oysters etc. If you like tapas, check out Tintol.

Have eaten there twice in the recent past. Ambiance pleasant . Food adequate.

I usually drift into there for dinner once every trip. Because its----there----and so convenient. I%26#39;ve never had a bad experience at Angus.
