I am so excited! I lived in NYC while earning my graduate degree for two years, and I truly love the city. If it were not for extenuating circumstances, I would still be there. Anyway, I have found the perfect excuse to come for a visit and everything is ALMOST falling into place!
My mom and I celebrate birthdays a week apart in January. So, I looked up airfare (great prices through Jetblue from Ohio for mom and Virginia for me) and hotel (I have heard great things about the Radio City Apartments and they are available at a great rate) for a long weekend between our birthdays. Now, my husband just needs to try to get time off work in January (he%26#39;s in the restaurant business--tough to get weekends off) and we%26#39;ll be heading back to the city!
My mom is concerned that the weather might be very cold (we experienced frigid temps when she came to visit me in the city for our birthdays in January 2004), so I am trying to come up with a list of indoor activities we haven%26#39;t done yet! A walk through Central Park (not indoors, but still a must), the American Folkart museum, and the Cloisters are a couple things off the top of my head. Any other suggestions would be most appreciated!
I'm ALMOST coming back...! Winter activities, please!
About the weather -- The US Dept of Agriculture has a map of ';zones'; based upon the annual lowest temperature. NYC is in Zone 7 -- which is the same zone as most of central Virgina, and also Maryland, DC, Delaware, and coastal New Jersey. Because it is right on the coast, NYC is noticeably warmer than subrubs of the city within a few miles to the north and west of it. On most winter days, the temperature in NYC is pretty much the same as it is in Washington or Richmond, give or take a degree or two -- and the more southerly cities are not always the warmer ones..
I'm ALMOST coming back...! Winter activities, please!
Thanks for the information GWB! I think my mom is concerned with the cold because if it is cold in Ohio she can get into a heated car and drive, while she knows in the city we%26#39;ll be walking a lot. But I%26#39;m sure she%26#39;ll get over it once we are there!
She%26#39;s from OHIO???? Ohio is certainly colder in the winter than NYC is!!!
GWB,
I grew up in Ohio and lived in NYC for two years and an hour upstate for a little over a year. I think they have comparable weather in the winter. Like I said before, in Ohio we have the option to warm up the car to get around town, while in NYC we walk most places and take the subway. Maybe that is why NYC feels just as cold, if not more so, than Ohio. Either way it doesn%26#39;t really matter since I just know there is going to be a heat wave in January for our weekend ;-)
Hi. That%26#39;s good, positive thinking. Plus, you can always dip into a store for a bit to warm up. Enjoy.
The Met Museum (take a ';highlights'; tour)
The American Museum of Natural History
Both of the se are pay-what-you-wish all the time. Check schedules.
Will you be here for the tail end of the Radio City Xmas Specatacular? If not, how about a show? I%26#39;m sure you know about the TKTS booths. Try the one in South Street Seaport.
How about the Frick, the Cooper-Hewitt or the Morgan Library? They are intimate museums, not overwhelming.
The Tenement Museum could be an option, too.
There%26#39;s also the Fire and Police Museums.
The possibilites are endless!
Thank you for the suggestions! I will definately do some research on those options!
I think you would all enjoy the Marvelous Manhattan Tour. Very informative, and they cover areas that other tours do not.
