5 hour stopover in NYC at JFK

Hi, I have a 5 hour stopover on a Monday at JFK airport. I arrive at noon and leave at 5 pm. Is there anything I could see in NYC in that time period and get back to JFK by about 3:30pm?

If your luggage is checked through and your flight is on time you will not get out of the termial until 12:30 at the earliest, then an hour to manhattan (1:30) then an hour in town for your trip back to the airport. Take the airtrain to Jamaca station, then the E train to 42nd street, look at times square, and return. or take the E train to 5th avenue and walk to Rock Center, go to top of the rock and get an view of the city. MoMA is also at the same stop, but an hour is really not enough time to see it all, but if you really like modern art it (Stary night is my favorite) then it might be worth the $20 admission.

PS this is a really tight schedule and really depends on you getting out of the airport no later than 12:30. Good luck and let me know how it works, you will only have about 45 minutes to an hour in manhattan.

What about Statue of Liberty? Would I have time to see that. I figure I will have only an hour to tour with back and forth time at the airport.

I am not going until Nov. 20. Weather could be a factor too.

Again, if you can get out of the airport by 12:30

Take the Airtrain to Howard Beach, then the A train to Chambers street in Manhattan. You will be by the workd trade center. You can go to the hudson river from the station and see the statue, view the wtc site and see the world financial center.

Thank you for the infomation. I will try one of them.

There has also been a lot of talk on this forum about the Panorama in Queens which is closer to JFK than going into Manhattan. This is a scaled model of the city. Here%26#39;s what Queensboulevard wrote:

';OK, as everyone who reads here regularly knows, I am a big booster of the Panorama. It is really cool, especially for repeat visitors. AND ESPECIALLY for urban planner-types like yourself!

It is in the Qeens Museum, and it is a scale model of the entire city. Including every single building. Yes, you read right: Every. Single. Freakin%26#39;. Building.

There are even teeny tiny airports with little airplanes that fly around. Find your hotel!

Here%26#39;s what it looks like if you were allowed to stand in it.

Here%26#39;s a great trip report that features the Panorama.

You could take the subway there (take the AirTrain to the E train then change at Jackson Ave./Roosevelt Ave. for the #7 to Willets Pt./Shea stadium stop). OR, take a taxi.

If you%26#39;ve never seen NYC for real, not sure if you want to see a model instead though. If you look at this subway map, you%26#39;ll see JFK is really next to Brooklyn.

I think I%26#39;d take the AirTrain to the A train and go to High St. in Brooklyn which is just near the Brooklyn Bridge. I%26#39;d have a look at the skyline from the Promenade. If time allows, walk over the bridge into Manhattan and then get on the subway in Manhattan (the A train again) and take it back to the airport.

Wow, some questions. Does it cost anything to walk over the Brooklyn Bridge? Tell me about the Skytrain. Cost etc... Would a taxi be faster? About how much would a cab be from JFK to World Trade Tower site? Are the trains pretty fast? I have looked at maps and am researching thoroughly all of my options. I thank you for your information. Any other cool things to do or see would be great. I have never been to NYC so this will be first time. I know my short time limits me. Also when I go and do any of these things do I just take the reverse way back to the airport? Thanks.

Costs nothing to walk over the Brooklyn Bridge.

The AirTrain costs $5 (it%26#39;s free within JFK to get from one terminal to the other but the cost comes to connect to the subway). I honestly don%26#39;t know whether a taxi would be faster. A taxi from JFK to the World Trade center would be the flat rate of $45 (from JFK to anywhere in Manhattan) plus toll ($4) plus tip or about $60.

I think you will be pushing it to do one thing (or go to one general location) in the time you have. If you are a confident traveler and like the idea of public transport, I think the train could be faster than the taxi. Or, you could use public transport in one direction and take a taxi in the other (although from Manhattan TO JFK is not a fixed rate, it%26#39;s whatever the meter says so traffic could affect the price +/-.

If you go to the WTC site, you should make sure to stop at St. Paul%26#39;s chapel across the way. As mentioned above, you can also see the World Financial Center/Winter Garden which is right nearby.

Ok, I am leaning on Top of the Rock. I am checking out the airtrain and subway maps. These are questions. I buy a metrocard at the airport? It is $5.00 to get to the E train and then $2.00 for that train? To get back to JFK the reverse is true. E train to Jamaica Station and then airtrain to JFK, another $7.00? Does this sound right? I also am going to go to the website and purchase my Top of the Rock ticket in advance. Which stop to get off for Top of the Rock? You guys are great!!
