My husband and I will be in New York at the end of December and would like to chill out in a bar and have a few games of pool one evening whilst we are there. Can anyone tell me where we would find a place in the area around Carnegie Hall as we are staying at a hotel near there. Also we were thinking of going to see a baseball game at Shea Stadium but I%26#39;ve looked at their website and there doesn%26#39;t seem to be any games in December. We%26#39;re not really sports fans but it%26#39;d be great to go and see a truly American sport played live whilst we%26#39;re there. Thank you in advance for any help :-)
Pool tables and ball games?Baseball season runs from April to October. (Let%26#39;s go Mets!!)
Football (American) games are played in the winter, but tickets are basically impossible to get. Both the New York Jets and the New York Giants play at a staidum in New Jersey called The Meadowlands.
How about a hockey game? Rangers games are fun! Great winter sport, you%26#39;ll see Madison Square Garden, and tickets are easy to get.

Not sure about Carnegie Hall area, but Slate is a fab-oo place for pool and a drink. It%26#39;s in Chelsea. You can take a taxi, or take the F train from 57th Street to 23rd Street/6th Avenue.

Pool tables and ball games? The closest billiard parlors is
Amsterdam Billiard and Bar - 344 Amsterdam Ave (W. 77th ST)
(212) 496-8180
There%26#39;s a great pool hall on 21st street between 5th-6th. There used to be another on 17th between 7th and 8th (not sure if its still there). I cant think of a bar with 1 table here but there are sure to be ones.
Not sure if the rules have changed but the law used to be you could have 1 table in a full bar - but places with more than 1 table (as in pool halls) could not serve liquor. I think the place on 21st gets around it by having the bar in a separate area.
The one on W. 17th is Slate. It is still there. Not sue about the one on W. 21st.
Hi. I%26#39;m not sure Amsterdam B. will be there in December. It%26#39;s due to close. :-(
Yeah, ever since it became Slate, they have bouncers and a little bit of %26#39;tude. But once you%26#39;re in, it%26#39;s actually a nice bar and good place to play pool in a clean, classy atmo. Good for group parties, etc. (Went to a nice mellow bachelorette party there. Nice change of pace from usual ';Chippendale%26#39;s'; stuff.)
The first place I know that had beer was Fieldston Billiards. Upstairs was bowling. They transformed that to billiards and kept using the liquor license. Upon renewal, they argued that there had been no problems since. They got their renewal. Others soon followed suit. How about a Rangers or Knicks game?
...and as for a bar with pool, how about Amsterdam Ave. There are a couple of good places up there, eg Jake%26#39;s Dilemma, The Racoon Lodge and The Gin Mill. Cheers.
Excellent info, that%26#39;s enought to be getting started with. I%26#39;m so excited about coming to NY. It%26#39;ll be my first time and I can%26#39;t wait. I%26#39;m sure this isn%26#39;t the last question I%26#39;ll be asking on this site. Thank you all so much. Bye.
The one on W21st is definitely still there. I live down the street
