Hi
My girlfiriend a left leg amputee is planning on visiting New York in April 07, I was there June 05 and honestly can%26#39;t remember if it is wheelchair friendly. I do remember we had to go down stairs to the subway stations. How will she go is New York wheelchair friendly, any site I can recommend?

Hi lovedNZ
I see you are from Exmouth - my birthplace!
Anyhow, do a search on this forum for wheelchair, disabled etc, and you will find heaps of info.
the subway system has a guide for accessibility:

the museum of Natural History is great, I went round there in a wheelchair in Feb this year.

This is actually being discussed in another thread titled ';Wheelchair in New York';. Nywhiz provided these links in that thread:

The subway system is not very wheelchair friendly. Elevator service is limited to very few stations. For example, the Times Square station has an elevator that will take you from street level to a level one floor above the train platform. They are constructing an elevator that will go to the train platform but the last time I looked it was not yet ready for use. Even when the elevator is in service the station to where you will be going may not have elevator service to street level
Buses are wheelchair friendly. All buses are kneeling buses and an area is set aside for wheelchairs should it be needed.
Taxis are a way to go assuming your friend is able to get out of the wheelchair to get into the taxi. The wheelchair will be put into the trunk.
