What are some good grocery stores (upper east/midtown area) where we can pick up some bread/sandwich meat/snacks/maybe fruit? to munch on while we%26#39;re sightseeing to save dining costs?

I%26#39;m not sure what is closest to you but Gristedes are all over. here are a few of the upper east/midtown locations:

York at E 87th St

Gristedes, C Town, Associated, Food Emporium are the ones that jump to mind, at least in the Upper East Side. I would go with the one closest to where you are staying. If it%26#39;s a Gristedes, it may make sense to get their card, the stuff on sale is only available with the card (same for Food Emporium). C Town, at least the one closest to me doesn%26#39;t require a card. The card is free.

We attended a conference at the New York Hilton a few years ago. I can%26#39;t remember what Avenue ithe hotel was on but it is the one aka ';Avenue of the Americas'; at 53rd or 54th on the west side of the street. We were happy to find a small but well-stocked grocer%26#39;s the next block or two north across the road (east side). I can%26#39;t remember its name but we were happy we could get beer, wine, fruit, and snacks w/o paying the exorbitant costs of room service. (The conference returns there next March and when we go our first task will be to get stuff for the room from that grocery--even breakfast foods. I do hope it%26#39;s still there.)

Dancingmind, while it is possible to get beer in a grocery store in NYC, one cannot buy wine in one -- wine in NYC is sold in liquor stores. Meanwhile, liquor stores do not ordinarily sell beer. I therefore think you may have been shopping at two stores.
